Watching Twin Peaks at 11 years of age, the American suburban fairytale that I had grown up with through 1980s Television and Film was now permeated with dark forces from parallel worlds and a hidden underlying reality.
This is my ongoing illustrated tribute. During a recent trip to the US I visited some of the real world locations as I traveled through Washington State and took a lot of photographs which helped as added reference for some of the iconic settings.
For me Twin Peaks is a disturbing, funny, absurdist exploration of the eternal struggle between good and evil in the undercurrents of our subconscious. The mastery of mood and setting, including the stripped-back use of vintage colour palettes to evoke nostalgia that contrast with darker atmospheric imagery are key influences on my work.

I had the great privilege of being invited by Paramount Pictures to the set in Wellington, New Zealand last year to join a small team of artists from around the world. We were given an exclusive tour of the sets, vehicles, props, pre-production visuals and costumes that shaped the film with the aim being to inspire us to create pieces in response to the experience. It was an unforgettable few days and I was lucky to meet some amazing people including the key creatives and crew working on the film.

“ Two years he walks the earth. No phone, no pool, no pets, no cigarettes. Ultimate freedom. An extremist. An aesthetic voyager whose home is the road. Escaped from Atlanta. Thou shalt not return, 'cause "the West is the best." And now after two rambling years comes the final and greatest adventure. The climactic battle to kill the false being within and victoriously conclude the spiritual pilgrimage. Ten days and nights of freight trains and hitchhiking bring him to the Great White North. No longer to be poisoned by civilization he flees, and walks alone upon the land to become lost in the wild. "
Alexander Supertramp, May 1992
(Christopher McCandless)

Steelarchive released a limited edition Blu-ray of the film including a slip case featuring my original artwork. I was also commissioned to create new artwork for the back cover and spine and decided to continue the scene around the full wrap. This edition of 500 is now sold out.

Of all Jack Kerouac's books I found 'Lonesome Traveler' to be his most transportative and immersive, in particular a chapter where he journals his experiences during the summer of 1956 when he worked as a fire lookout on Desolation Peak in Washington State.
Drawing from the startling imagery conjured by his writing and my own travels to the Pacific Northwest I made these visual responses.
